Title: Meltybrains? Mask In The Abbey
Type:
Lab
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Client: Meltybrains?
Date: 2018

Sell out shows, energetic electronic music and a strong absurdist aesthetic. Meltybrains? are one of Ireland’s most distinctive electronic bands. And they came to us for help with a very special gig.

To get ready for this performance, we had to:

  • Create a 5m-high Meltybrains? mask
  • Design content for 20 songs
  • Performance capture the band
  • Projection map our content to the mask

Historic venue for cutting-edge show

This hotly anticipated gig was one of the highlights of the 2018 Dublin Fringe Festival.

It took place in the Abbey Theatre, one of Dublin’s iconic performance spaces. The theatre has been at the heart of Ireland’s literary and cultural scene for well over 100 years and is known for its boundary-pushing productions. It rarely hosts gigs, which put an even bigger focus on the Meltybrains? gig.

Bringing the mask to life

One of the most visually striking things about Meltybrains? is their trademark mask. So that’s what we used as a focal point for the gig.

We built a huge 5m high mask. Then we designed content for the 20 Meltybrains? songs in the set and projection-mapped that content onto the giant mask.

This mask was able to talk in a lifelike way thanks to the data we gathered during a series of performance captures of the band.
