The Future is an ambitious event series that celebrates creativity in media, design and culture. For its 2017 iteration, it invited a slew of high profile speakers to the RDS, Dublin.

That meant it needed a trailer as diverse and inspiring as the event itself. So that’s where Algorithm came in.

In order to create this trailer, we had to:

  • Collaborate with some of Ireland’s most exciting creators
  • Design and plan the overarching concept
  • Shoot everything in 120fps
  • Edit abstract footage into a coherent flow

Out of this world concepts

The Future discusses the ways creative people can influence the world. And those possibilities are endless. Because the festival has such a wide remit, we took a multi-layered approach to the video.

Microcosms and micro-universes were the inspiration behind this project. Viewers can see that inspiration in the intricate details and different textures used throughout this video.

Talent scouting

Reflecting The Future’s emphasis on creativity was essential. That's why we reached out to both new and established artists to collaborate with us.

Albert Hooi shared the co-director title with Algorithm’s own Kevin Freeney. We also worked closely with textile designer Aine Katrina Byrne, choreographer Janna Kemperman and composer Simon Cullen throughout the creation of The Future trailer.

Up to speed

We shot all the footage for this project at 120fps. Every element in this slow-motion video is continuously flowing. Nothing is stationary – even the bismuth metals and crystals are constantly rotating.
