Out of the Ordinary is a virtual reality community opera, created through a series of workshops with communities around Ireland, in collaboration with Irish National Opera.
BRIEF
Examining ideas generated by the community workshops and the INO team and translating them into a fully fledged virtual reality experience.
THE IDEA
To achieve the surreal look of Out of the Ordinary, our team employed a combination of digital painting and AI visualisation techniques. This allowed for quick iteration and many different moods to be created in a short space of time. The opera features an array of dream-like landscapes; From an underwater paradise to a nightmarish apocalypse to a Spring nature scene, following the narrative sung by the main characters, Daol and Nalva.
RESULT
Creating what felt like a natural environment in a very unnatural setting was a task in itself. Motion capture data recorded in the workshops was implemented in various actors in the scenes such as the fish in the underwater environment. The team additionally used many different particle systems, generated to replicate the randomness of nature. The resulting experience was shown around theatre festivals in Ireland to critical acclaim.
A more in depth look at the entire process is available on the Official Website for the Opera.
